The Opportunity
The Ministry of Defence has announced the intention to close Clive Barracks, Tern Hill in 2029.
Clive Barracks extends to 72 hectares and is located approximately 4.5km south-west of the attractive town of Market Drayton in Shropshire. The site has been identified as a proposed Strategic Settlement within the draft Shropshire Local Plan (which is currently the subject of examination).
The Draft Shropshire Local Plan
This proposes that this new settlement will provide a range of local services and facilities, around 750 dwellings, around 6ha of employment land and extensive green infrastructure. The draft Shropshire Local Plan proposes that a masterplan will be undertaken to inform redevelopment of the site and also identifies a range of proposed development guidelines to inform this process and any resultant development.
Working In Partnership
Shropshire Council, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and other stakeholders have and will continue to work together to inform proposals for this site, via the local MP-led task force.
Situated on a strategically significant corridor for Shropshire
The site is accessed from the A41 and is based just south of a major intersection with the A53. The A41 is a strategically significant corridor for both Shropshire and the wider West Midlands road network. It affords direct road access to the north-west for local, through and freight traffic to the Cheshire area and the greater North West conurbation including Manchester and Liverpool airports.
Access to the rest of the Midlands & beyond
Running parallel to the M6 corridor, the A41 also offers access to international ports at Liverpool. To the south west, within a 30 minute drive, easy access is available to the M54 corridor (local, business and commuter journeys), and onward to the wider West Midlands conurbation and the national Strategic Motorway network for freight movements.
Shropshire occupies a unique position
Shropshire is a high-quality location, and its economic landscape provides significant opportunities. It occupies a unique position within the West Midlands Combined Authority and Midlands Engine, on the border of the Northern Powerhouse and the boundary of Wales.
HS2 will provide even greater connectivity
The county will benefit significantly from both the Birmingham HS2 Hub and the future Crewe Hub. HS2 will be the world’s most advanced passenger railway and the backbone of the UK’s rail network. Crewe station, just 20 miles north of Tern Hill, will be a ‘high speed hub’ supplying first-class services for both passengers and freight and providing even better connectivity from Shropshire to the North West, North East and London.
