Cold Move

Cold Move case study

Cold Move is a family owned business based in Oswestry Shropshire. It offers storage and distribution services to the food industry, along with blast freezing and re-packing operations. Its growth and innovation are partly due to the company’s ability to read and respond to the ever changing market place in which it operates.

The company started in Shropshire in the 1950s. It demonstrated considerable foresight by expanding into the then fledgling frozen food industry and became the first frozen food wholesaler and distributor in the region. In the 1970s it expanded to cater for the market need to provide bulk cold storage.

Nowadays, Cold Move employs 130 employees and offers state-of-the-art temperature controlled storage, ambient warehousing and primary and secondary distribution across the UK.

As a home-grown Shropshire company, James Woodward, Managing Director says that the County has a lot to offer:

“The transport network in Shropshire has improved tremendously over the years. We have excellent links via dual carriageway and motorway to both the North and South of the UK.

Employment costs are also favourable compared to other regions and generally development costs are lower too.”

James also has advice for any companies looking to move to the County:

“There is plenty of support for businesses here through the Marches Growth Hub, the Shropshire Development Board and in Oswestry, the local Economic committees. We have received a lot of support over the years with advice, grants and loans.”

As a company, Cold Move has been very successful in accessing funding to reduce their environmental impact and improve their bottom-line. James comments,

“We have committed to reducing our carbon footprint across the entire business with a reduction of 25% by 2020. In 2013 we were successful in applying for funding to invest £40,000 in an extensive Energy Management System so that our cold rooms and blast freezers work at optimum temperatures, pulling and storing electricity at the cheapest rate. We are currently looking at a further £30,000 investment in energy efficient lighting.”

“We are a highly motivated, customer focused organisation who pride ourselves on being leaders in the field of temperature controlled cold storage and distribution.”
